What are chapters?

Although our organization started with summer camps, we developed after-school chapters as a way to continue teaching our students throughout the school year! Chapters are one-hour sessions for 4th-8th grade students that meet once a week. High school mentors will walk students through a Steel City Codes-designed curriculum in either Java or Python. Students can join without any prior experience; we ensure that each and every student is challenged with respect to their ability level!

(Due to the impact of COVID-19, some Steel City Codes chapters will be held virtually. Please contact your local chapter if their virtual/in-person status is not listed on this page. Thank you! )

FAQs

How much does a chapter cost?

Nothing! All of the materials your child will need—from laptops to worksheets—will be provided by us.
(Note: You WILL need to provide your own laptop for virtual chapter sessions.)

Are there different classes for varying experience levels in a chapter?

That’s entirely up to you! We provide curriculum materials for students at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, which larger chapters are free to utilize to provide a variety of offerings to students.

If I’m a high school student, can I sign-up to volunteer?

Of course! Any high school student (grades 9-12) with a background in CS can apply to volunteer. Just email the Chapter Head at your local chapter and they’ll help you get started!

Who can participate?

Anyone in 4th-8th grade (ages 9-14) is free to register as a student. If you have any other special circumstances regarding your child, reach out to us at contact@steelcitycodes.org. Please include your child’s city and state in the email.

How long does each session last? How many sessions are there in a school year?

Each session typically lasts an hour long, and is held weekly! Our curriculum is intended to last for 12 sessions each school year, but it can vary from chapter to chapter. After chapters are done with our curriculum, they may still hold sessions to work on projects!

I want to support your chapters. Can I sponsor/donate to Steel City Codes?

Absolutely! Steel City Codes is 100% funded through sponsors and community donations. Get started as a partner here, or donate directly to our organization here.

Email contact@steelcitycodes.org with any other questions/concerns (please include your child’s city and state), and we will get back to you as soon as possible!
